EDUCATION MATTERS: "COLLEGE GOAL SUNDAY" ON JAN. 25TH
On Sunday, January 25, 2009 twelve (12) sites throughout the state: Bridgeport Central High School, Capital Community College, Eastern CT State University, Gateway Community College, Manchester Community College, Middlesex Community College, New London Science and Technology High School, Norwalk Community College, Post University, Saint Joseph College, The Discovery Museum and Western CT State University, will participate in Connecticut’s “College Goal Sunday”. The event, which is sponsored by the Connecticut Association of Professional Financial Aid Administrators, the Connecticut Association of Educational Opportunity Programs, the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administration and the Lumina Foundation, " is a volunteer effort to help low income families, high school seniors and juniors, minority students and first generation college students complete the Free FASFA Application for Federal Student Aid.
College Goal Sunday will take place from 1:30 to 4:30 pm statewide and will provide students and parents with one on one advice about planning for college. Professional financial aid personnel will not only assist students and their families in completing and submitting their FAFSA form online but offer valuable information about the benefits of attending college, student support services, areas of study and different degree programs.
The common goal of the College Goal Sunday program is to make sure that the process of applying for college financial aid does not become an obstacle that would keep any person from pursuing an education beyond high school. By attending a College Goal Sunday event, participants are sure to walk away with a properly completed financial aid application and the satisfaction of knowing they have accomplished one of the biggest steps in getting ready to go to college. Approximately 40 states nationwide either host a College Goal Sunday event or are in preparation for implementation in 2009.
